Why didn't I think of this Image! Myoung Ho Lee has found a way to showcase nature as the ideal. Putting a new spin on landscape art in the process, commendable. The old school prints (photographs) take me to a timeless world, where I stop thinking about how Science has created everything, and start to loose myself in the fun of creation. The beauty of humanity and all we can do. Just stunning quality to the prints, and all by hand. The work never tires for me, and the ideas that come from it are awe inspiring.  The work reminds me how to connect to mother earth as well as leaving me utterly stunned, and amazed, I consume it all. I really can't say enough about how amazing of a team they are. This show is their best work. It does travel so keep an eye out if you are into these images... Even more amazing in your face!

Critique of modern portraits.

Let me preface by saying no disrespect to modern portrait painters, if you're making money in your field I guess you found your niche. That being said is painting clear portraits really relevant anymore? (If you can put a spin on portraiture like Francis Bacon or Chuck Close I am not speaking to you. Paintings above)

 Francis Bacon said "You see, painting has now become, or all art has now become completely a game, by which man distracts himself. What is fascinating actually is, that it's going to become much more difficult for the artist, because he must really deepen the game to become any good at all."

Today I went searching for something inspiring, unfortunately I came across a great deal of painted portraits. I can not see the relevancy of a portrait that is, well, real and true to life. Not to name names, ehhh hemm Sharon Sprung if a painting is to real, to close to a snapshots it is therefor too irrelevant to progressive art these days. It is simply an exercise. With the invention of the camera and its indisputable realism painting has had to adapt . These remaining portrait painters are clearly very talented, this much is true, but that's where it stops. I just wish they could use their talent to comment on something more then reflect it, or something more then the mundane, just MORE. After all, the thing that makes painting so great is that it can look like reality but still be through a warped perspective; to show something more then reality. If all you do is paint reality how are you any better then a camera? A camera can do it faster, make it look more real, it will trump the realistic painter in clarity of image every time. I hate to say it, well no I don't, the rabbit done died. With the invention of the camera realistic painting has become obsolete. I do understand the romantic notions of the past and the famous paintings of realism that were produced then, but thats the key word: then. Now a days the competition is just pushing the envelope to much for realism in painting to any longer be relevant. Painters, you must go deeper. If you are one who is really attached to realistic portraiture, maybe you should become a photographer. Bold yes, but if painting is to progress it must let literal realism go. Gerhard Richter examines this notion in his postmodern works, trying to find a home for painting portraits outside of the real. Due to his exploration on the subject, you have no excuse.

Mark Warren Jacques

Yes, I posted one of his paintings before, but let me give him even more deserved attention. Mark Warren Jacques an American Artist out of Columbus Ohio. I see his body of work as modern Romanticism our age seems to be lacking, me being a hopeless romantic, I can't get enough. His work is simple, geometric,  exploding with color, thus lending to his point "work is love made visible" or as I see it he just wants to express emotion, and do so well. The titles of his work suggest some basic philosophy, commonly forgotten but should often be recited (see titles of works in this blog). Also -naturally for a romantic- they reference love and all the emotion that drive the human condition.  I have a strange connection to his work I'll admit.
The simplicity of the shapes mixed with the complexity of the emotions he is trying to translate leaves me fascinated by the juxtaposition. I really could be lost in it for months... no honestly, his paintings have been my computer background since last year when I found him.... and my Itouch background...and my phone. Its refreshing to see an artist who is in it for the message, not the money.
Keep reminding me what its all about MWJ...Keep it up!

What Is Art In A Digital World?

Art to me has always been about the process, this comes from my photography training, never the less, art expressed correctly is an overwhelming emotion coming from the mind or the heart through the HAND! In some way commenting on the human condition. Don't forget this! In  our modern world this notion is becoming more and more obsolete. I would just like to say that technology is made to assist us in our artistic process not become ART. Please remember this and all the digital art that is bull shit should be greatly reduced, leaving us with i hope a beautiful hybrid of technology and human artists.

Jeff Soto.

I am a big fan of monsters. In particular Jeff Soto's work on them. The eyes he gives these little guys are (to me) so expressive I see human in them. They look so harmless but, upon closer inspection you can see that Soto is really trying to convey the life and strife of whatever characters -or whom ever- inspire life into these little creatures. It reminds me of something Paul Budnitz (creator of KIDROBOT) would love to turn into a collectible little toy. If you men don't know each other already, you should talk...

Normally I make a strong argument as to why cloud photos suck.  That being said, I enjoy Mitch Dobrowner's Storm Clouds. I just may stay and watch the storm from an unprotected hillside to marvel in them.
